In 1942, a Nevada State Journal editorial suggested the time was ripe and of the essence to establish a nonprofit organization to ensure Reno resident’s welfare and well-being was provided for during WWII. A committee from other associations and service groups embraced this concept and met at the Chamber of Commerce located in Reno, Nevada to discuss.  From this meeting, the Reno War and Community Chest was formed.  Today this organization is known as the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.
