Description: The History Department is sponsoring a two-day Nevada Statehood and Constitution symposium in honor of the Nevada sesquicentennial. The theme of the symposium is “All for the Union.” The featured address will be presented on the first day of the symposium by University of Virginia Professor Gary Gallagher at 7 p.m. at the University’s Ansari Business Building, Room 106. Gallagher is the author of The Union War.  The second day of the symposium will be held in the Great Room of the Joe Crowley Student Union. The event will include a panel discussion titled Nevada Statehood and Society 1864 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a second panel discussion titled Nevada Constitution: Inception and Duration from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Panel members include Portland State University Professor David Johnson, State Historical Preservation Officer Ron James, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Professor Michael Green, History Office U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Michael Brodhead and Historian of Suffrage in Nevada Dana Bennett. Professor Bill Rowley will be the moderator for the panels. The symposium is a Nevada 150 Signature Event of Nevada’s 150th anniversary celebration. Both events are free and open to the public.
