Description: The theme for this Project Based Learning Community Event is the celebration of Nevada’s 150 statehood anniversary. On October 31st 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the union. Nevada gained statehood during the Civil War at the direction of Abraham Lincoln, thus our state motto “Battle Born.” On October 31st 2013 the state of Nevada will officially kick off its year-long sesquicentennial celebration culminating on October 31st 2014. I designed this PBL with the intention of not only having students discover the history of our state, and to celebrate our achievements over the last 150 years, but also to contemplate the challenges we must overcome if we are to become an economic, cultural, and educational leader of the nation.  Students will engage in a rigorous research project to learn more about an important aspect of Nevada’s history, the driving question of their research will include: What was Nevada like in 1864 at the time of its founding? What is Nevada like today? What will Nevada need to do to be prosperous in the future? Students will then create various projects to communicate their findings.  The PBL will conclude with a community event scheduled for April 10th 2014 in which we will have presentations from Nevada scholars, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Blasdell (NVs 1st governor) and Civil War interpreters, Las Vegas’s founding mother Helen Stewart and Mark Twain.
