It’s rivalry week in the Silver State as the State’s two only college football teams square off in the annual rivalry game known as the “Battle for the Fremont Cannon”. This year’s game comes with added significance as part of the Governor’s Series presented by NV Energy, an all-sports competition between the schools and is the first time this rivalry game will be played on Nevada Day Weekend. The winner of the rivalry game gets to paint and take home the Fremont Cannon –which is college football’s largest and most expensive “trophy”. The cannon is a replica of a gun that accompanied Captain John C. Fremont on his expedition through Oregon, Nevada and California in 1843-44.
