The addition of Nevada as a state changed the nation in several important ways.

First, the addition of Nevada to the nation played a deciding role in the Civil War. Nevada was originally created as a federal territory in 1861so that its wealth from silver discovered in the Comstock Lode could be used to finance the Union’s effort to defeat the South in the Civil War. Nevada became a state in 1864 in order to help reelect President Abraham Lincoln and support his policies, including the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery. Without the additional votes to reelect President Lincoln,it is possible that slavery would not have ended, and  Nevada may have become a part of the confederate states.

Second, Nevada has changed the nation as a result of its contributions to the nation’s defense. There is a vast amount  of unpopulated land in Nevada because the Federal Government owns more than  85 percent  of  the  land  in  Nevada. The military   is able  to  do  training  exercises with  live ammunition and fly planes at high speeds over these open spaces, including  at the following bases: Nellis Air Force Base, Naval Air Station Fallon, and Hawthorne Army Depot.  Naval Air Station Fallon is the home of Top Gun, which trains the best Navy pilots for combat.   Area 51is a remote location  of Edwards Air Force Base in Nevada where the military  conducts highly secret activities.  It was rumored that  the military  was secretly testing new  aircraft  in  Area 51, such as the  stealth  bomber.  Some people  think  the military  captured  aliens and conducted tests on them  there.   Between 1951 and 1992, 900 tests of nuclear devices were conducted at the Nevada Test Site, and the impacts of these tests are being studied today.

Another example of how Nevada changed the nation was through the construction of the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression on the border of the states of Nevada and Arizona. The Hoover Dam provides a dependable source of water for farmers and ranchers in the southwestern United States and also provides an inexpensive source of electricity  for people.  Because it was built during the difficult time in this country of the Great Depression, Hoover Dam turned out to be a source of pride for all Americans. It is considered one of the great engineering accomplishments in the world and has been compared to the Great Pyramid in Egypt and the Great Wall of China. As a result, Hoover Dam has also became a popular tourist attraction, which helps the economy of Nevada.

Nevada also serves the nation, as well as the rest of the world, as a destination for entertainment. Every year, millions  of people visit Nevada throughout the year to do a variety of things, including gambling, outdoor activities, getting married or divorced, and going to concerts and festivals. One of these festivals is Burning Man, which is a week-long festival held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada. It attracts tens of thousands of people who come from around the world. In addition to gambling, people can play games, watch movies and go to dinner or concerts or shows at the casino resorts in Nevada.

The above mentioned examples are just some of the reasons why the addition of Nevada changed the nation.
